Poetry Prompt: Week 3

I decided to challenge myself to write more and I am doing a poetry prompt each week. If any other writers are interested in prompts for writing check out Poets & Writers website: http://www.pw.org/writing-prompts-exercises.

Poetry Prompt:

As forms of creative expression, music and poetry share similarities in the usage of sound and rhythm to generate emotional resonance. Musicians and poets have often expressed their mutual admiration, and even collaborated with each other. Read the poem “Don’t You Wonder, Sometimes?,” from Tracy K. Smith‘s collection Life on Mars (Graywolf Press, 2011), with its many references to David Bowie, or watch an animation of Charles Bukowski’s “The Laughing Heart” read by Tom Waits. Then write a poem of your own inspired by the mood or themes of a favorite musician or song.

Patience & Grace

Searching for a taste of Nirvana,

I remember the colour and the shape,

My hero, I’m walking after you,

Knowing that there is no way back,

Plunging into the wild tides of a hurricane,

Mother Nature’s summer is coming,

Painting stars in the sky,

Making something from nothing,

Tracing the path through sonic highways,

Passing through sound city,

Just like you, I am a river,

Nothing is ever set in stone,

Following the breadcrumbs,

One foot in front of the other…

Poetry Prompt: Week 2

I decided to challenge myself to write more and I am doing a poetry prompt each week. If any other writers are interested in prompts for writing check out Poets & Writers website: http://www.pw.org/writing-prompts-exercises.

Poetry Prompt:

The end of the year is often accompanied by the practice of looking back at the previous twelve months and drawing up “Best of” lists: best moments, best books, best songs. As the new year kicks off, browse through some 2015 lists and jot down words, phrases, and notes about the themes in popular songs and books. Then write a poem that encapsulates the spirit of the music and literature recognized in 2015.

Beginning to End

Beneath the surface,

Praying to Saint Odd,

The girl on the train,

There is no trigger warning,

Shock me to the night sky,

Hello my Blackstar.

“Your self-esteem won’t come from body parts. You need to step away from the mirror every once in a while, and look for another reflection, like the one in the eyes of the people who love you and admire you.” – Stacy London

Positive Self Reflection

My skin is made of ivory,

My lips, soft pink rose petals,

My hair is free like the wind,

That blows through it,

My eyes are as blue as the sky,

My soul is as deep as the ocean,

My heart beats to music,

My language is anything,

But ordinary prose.

The Decision

Love me, hate me,

You’re part of what created me,

Care or stare,

I reflect a love you used to share,

Ready or not here I am,

Do or don’t you give a damn.

Little Girl

These feelings have not changed,

Time has done nothing to ease,

The pain,

It is a mere pastime,

Attempting to fill a void,

Unsuccessfully,

At the end of the day,

I am just a little girl,

That wants her Mom.

“Sometimes you have to sacrifice your performance for high heels.” -Gwen Stefani

High Heels

I walk slowly downstairs,

Holding close to the railing,

I meet up with her,

As she quickly signs the card,

We leave earlier,

So we won’t be late,

In case we get lost,

I tell her I made the wrong,

Shoe choice for today,

She laughs and she says,

She knew she shouldn’t have,

Worn high heels either,

But, she loves heels,

As we continue down the,

Highway,

To an outdoor wedding.
