Where did you go? : A quick update

Hello everyone!

First I want to apologize for falling so far behind on posting here at TOAM. Sometimes as you all know life throws us a curve ball  and certain projects have to get put on the back burner for a bit. I am happy to say that I will be posting more often again! I have set up a new posting schedule that correlates better with my busier lifestyle. Play, Repeat: My Current Song Obsession will now be posted bi- weekly as I am hoping to get more in depth with each of the songs. The poetry prompts will remain on a weekly basis and the All Cancer Awareness posts will also remain the same. However this year I am trying to incorporate lesser known and rarer cancers as well as the more well known cancers. So thank you all for your patience and for reading my posts! Be on the lookout for more here on TOAM very soon!

Poetry Prompt: Week 3

I decided to challenge myself to write more and I am doing a poetry prompt each week. If any other writers are interested in prompts for writing check out Poets & Writers website: http://www.pw.org/writing-prompts-exercises.

Poetry Prompt:

As forms of creative expression, music and poetry share similarities in the usage of sound and rhythm to generate emotional resonance. Musicians and poets have often expressed their mutual admiration, and even collaborated with each other. Read the poem “Don’t You Wonder, Sometimes?,” from Tracy K. Smith‘s collection Life on Mars (Graywolf Press, 2011), with its many references to David Bowie, or watch an animation of Charles Bukowski’s “The Laughing Heart” read by Tom Waits. Then write a poem of your own inspired by the mood or themes of a favorite musician or song.

Patience & Grace

Searching for a taste of Nirvana,

I remember the colour and the shape,

My hero, I’m walking after you,

Knowing that there is no way back,

Plunging into the wild tides of a hurricane,

Mother Nature’s summer is coming,

Painting stars in the sky,

Making something from nothing,

Tracing the path through sonic highways,

Passing through sound city,

Just like you, I am a river,

Nothing is ever set in stone,

Following the breadcrumbs,

One foot in front of the other…

Changes- David Bowie

This song is one of my favorite Bowie songs. The beat is catchy and it is impossible not to sing along once it hits the chorus. I really relate to the lyrics, life is a constant set of different challenges that one must face . Although change can be frightening, unexpected and difficult it is needed. Without change there wouldn’t be growth. I wanted to do this song also as a tribute to David Bowie, thank you for all the music and remaining true to yourself. You and your music will live on always.

David Bowie’s career spanned over 5 decades. With 26 studio albums starting with the self titled David Bowie (1967) and his last album Blackstar (2016) he experimented in many genres and inspired many different musicians. He also starred in many movies, many remember his role in Labrinyth as Jareth the Goblin King.  He remained active in music until his death on January 10, 2016 after a battle with liver cancer.

January: Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Definition:

Cervical Cancer- Starts in a woman’s cervix. It begins when normal cells on the surface of the cervix change and grow uncontrollably forming a mass called a tumor.

There are two main types of cervical cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. They are named by the cells where the cancer starts. Other types of cervical cancer are rare. Squamous cell carcinoma makes up about 80% to 90% of all cervical cancers. Adenocarcinoma makes up 10%-20% of all cervical cancers.

Signs & Symptoms:

Most women do not have any signs or symptoms of a precancer or early stage cervical cancer. In most cases the symptoms do not appear until the cancer has spread to other tissues and organs.

  • Blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods
  • Menstrual bleeding that is longer and heavier than usual
  • Bleeding after intercourse, douching or a pelvic examination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding after  menopause
  • Increased vaginal discharge

Prevention: Getting an annual physical examination, pap tests and pelvic examinations

Under Our Spell- The Dazzlings

This week is a special Play, Repeat. Today my niece celebrated her birthday and I had her choose her current favorite song for the post.  I had to do a little research as I have never watched My Little Ponies : Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks.  The Dazzlings are a trio consisting of Adagio Dazzle, Aria Blaze and Sonata Dusk. I really like that all of their names come from music terms: Adagio– meaning the tempo of the music is to be played slowly, Aria- a long, accompanied song  for a solo voice, and Sonata- a composition for an instrumental soloist. The Dazzlings are revealed to be sirens that feed off of negative energy and are able to control others through their singing. They are loosely based off of the sirens of Greek mythology which would lure sailors to shipwreck with their songs. The song is quite catchy and has a good beat to it.   My niece said that she loves how the bad girls sing and that she likes to sing it. Perhaps she has been put under their spell?

Poetry Prompt: Week 2

I decided to challenge myself to write more and I am doing a poetry prompt each week. If any other writers are interested in prompts for writing check out Poets & Writers website: http://www.pw.org/writing-prompts-exercises.

Poetry Prompt:

The end of the year is often accompanied by the practice of looking back at the previous twelve months and drawing up “Best of” lists: best moments, best books, best songs. As the new year kicks off, browse through some 2015 lists and jot down words, phrases, and notes about the themes in popular songs and books. Then write a poem that encapsulates the spirit of the music and literature recognized in 2015.

Beginning to End

Beneath the surface,

Praying to Saint Odd,

The girl on the train,

There is no trigger warning,

Shock me to the night sky,

Hello my Blackstar.

Let It Be- The Beatles

Today it has been 5 years since my Mom lost her battle with lung cancer. I wanted to chose a song that she enjoyed and that she “chose” so to speak. After looking through her music collection I decided that this was the song.  This song is for you Mom.

The album Let It Be  was the twelfth and final album by The Beatles.  It was released almost a month after the groups breakup.  The Beatles formed in Liverpool in the year 1960. They are considered the most influential act of the rock era. The group experimented with many genres of music throughout their career.
